Blu-ray Buyer’s Guide: May 23


It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these – partially because there haven’t really been any movies I consider worthy of buying…at least at full price. But this week, one of the year’s best films (so far) is being released!

Here’s my pick for May 23, 2017.

The X-Men film series has had its share of ups and downs. For every great film like X2 and Days of Future Past, there’s a The Last Stand and Apocalypse. And then there are those that are sort of in between (First Class).

Logan is probably the best X-Men film to date – and I don’t say that lightly. It’s Hugh Jackman’s finest performance as the character, and what a performance! It’s Wolverine at his hardcore best – beaten by and tired of life but finding a degree of redemption in a little girl he shares a deep connection with. The film is a thoughtful, brutal, futuristic western – and James Mangold brings it to life in his signature, character-driven way. Mangold previously directed The Wolverine, which wasn’t bad and had some shreds of greatness (aside from the final act). Logan is a decided improvement.

This Blu-ray release is interesting because each comes with two versions of the film: the theatrical and a special black-and-white “noir” version. Given the noir/western feel of the film itself, this new version is definitely worth a watch.

Target: Exclusive photo book


Walmart: Nine collector cards that form a “legacy” poster

My Pick: Target makes the cut this time around. The book is a great keepsake and companion to the “noir” version included in the release. The SteelBook is okay, and the cards are just not appealing to me.
