Blu-ray Buyer’s Guide: May 23

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these – partially because there haven’t really been any movies I consider worthy of buying…at least at full price. But this week, one of the year’s best films (so far) is being released!

Here’s my pick for May 23, 2017.

20th Century Fox
Written by Scott Frank, James Mangold
and Michael Green

Based on a story by James Mangold
and characters appearing in Marvel Comics
Directed by James Mangold

The X-Men film series has had its share of ups and downs. For every great film like X2 and Days of Future Past, there’s a The Last Stand and Apocalypse. And then there are those that are sort of in between (First Class).

Logan is probably the best X-Men film to date – and I don’t say that lightly. It’s Hugh Jackman’s finest performance as the character, and what a performance! It’s Wolverine at his hardcore best – beaten by and tired of life but finding a degree of redemption in a little girl he shares a deep connection with. The film is a thoughtful, brutal, futuristic western – and James Mangold brings it to life in his signature, character-driven way. Mangold previously directed The Wolverine, which wasn’t bad and had some shreds of greatness (aside from the final act). Logan is a decided improvement.

This Blu-ray release is interesting because each comes with two versions of the film: the theatrical and a special black-and-white “noir” version. Given the noir/western feel of the film itself, this new version is definitely worth a watch.

Best Buy: Exclusive SteelBook

Target: Exclusive photo book

Walmart: Nine collector cards that form a “legacy” poster

My Pick: Target makes the cut this time around. The book is a great keepsake and companion to the “noir” version included in the release. The SteelBook is okay, and the cards are just not appealing to me.

Happy Watching!
