Here it is…the first Buyer’s Guide of 2017. There haven’t been that many notable Blu-ray releases this year (at least, as far as I’m concerned). Only one release, though. But it’s one of my favorite films of last year.
Here’s my pick for February 28, 2017.
Written by Jon Spaihts, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill
Based on characters appearing in Marvel Comics
Directed by Scott Derrickson
When this film was announced by Marvel Studios a few years ago, I was somewhat skeptical. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always had a reality-based bent to it.
Even something as fantastical as the world of Thor was explained in a way to keep it at least scientifically plausible. However, Doctor Strange lives in the more metaphysical and mystical side of the Marvel Comics Universe.
Luckily, Marvel Studios was up to the challenge and created an excellent, plausible avenue to explore this mystical side of the MCU. With varying degrees of success, it is explained why and how the reality-bending set pieces are happening. There is also a deeply spiritual aspect to the film’s narrative – with takes on destiny, breaking rules to achieve power, and even a touch on the nature of the devil.
What really makes me happy about this release is that Marvel Studios has finally decided to bring the digital copy back to all versions and not just the 3D release. I really got tired of purchasing the 3D edition just to get the digital copy (the same applies for additional binus features). I suspect that Marvel did this to charge a premium. Glad they saw a better way to do business. Now if they could only work on more bonus features and Marvel One-Shots…
Best Buy: Exclusive SteelBook (also applies to 3D release)
Target: Exclusive digital bonus footage (also applies to 3D release)
My Pick: Target wins, hands down. Bonus footage always trumps SteelBook. It’s just a better value for your money.
