Blu-ray Buyer’s Guide: November 1

We’re going “beyond” this week on the Buyer’s Guide. Only one release, and the options are pretty cool.

Here is my pick for November 1, 2016.

Paramount Pictures
Written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung
Based on the Star Trek franchise created by Gene Roddenberry
Directed by Justin Lin

This Star Trek reboot series has bee the shot in the arm the franchise needed, in my opinion. It needed a little more energy – and J.J. Abrams delivered with the first two films (though there were some definite problems with Into Darkness).

With Star Trek Beyond, Abrams has relinquished the captain’s chair and given it to Justin Lin, the director of four of the Fast and Furious films. Lin continues Abrams’ more action-oriented style and still maintains the Star Trek series’ hallmark sense of wonder and interesting moral dilemmas. The only area in which this film suffers is the villain, which has been the Achille’s heel of the franchise from the get-go – including the older films (exempting Wrath of Khan, of course).

Best Buy: SteelBook packaging.

Target: Includes bonus disc andĀ four double-sided character cards.

Walmart: Includes models of USS Enterprise, USS Franklin and the Swarm Ship.

My Pick: Target wins for sure. You can’t go wrong with bonus content. The more the better as far as I’m concerned. The ships are neat, but I already have too many toys on my desk at work as it is.

That’s it for this week’s Blu-ray Buyer’s Guide. Happy watching!
